The good news is that Heraldry Australia have a very special lecture coming up – and Secretary Stephen Szabo assures us that Ricardians  are very welcome to attend.

The speaker is Professor Stephanie Trigg from Melbourne University and the subject is “Ladies of Eminence Known to Us: Women and the Order of the Garter”. The talk is illustrated and surveys the history of women’s involvement with the Order from its foundation in 1348  to the present.

The date is Friday, October 23, the place the Mitchell Theatre on the first floor of the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts  and  the time 6.15pm – doors open at 5.30pm.

Entry is by gold coin donation, refreshments will be served beforehand and, of course, there’ll be one of Heraldry Australia’s special raffles.

If you want to attend, please contact secretary@richardiii-nsw.org.au or get in touch with Stephen Szabo secretary@heraldryaustralia.org. He needs to know the numbers by Monday October 19. We hear there will be a dinner afterwards, but details have yet to be finalised. We’ll keep you posted.

Richard on Facebook

   Posted by: Dorothea Preis Tags:

white-rose-smallFor those of you on facebook, I recently discovered (thanks to the WA branch) that there is on facebook  a Common Interest – History Group on Richard III.  If you are on facebook, go to http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=1775&post=44543&uid=2216688256#/board.php?uid=2216688256

So far the group has 601 members with very interesting discussions.  Topics include among others:

  • Things Richard Gets a Bad Rap for
  • Anyone else wants to scream reading Alison Weir’s books
  • Daughter of Time
  • Who done it?

The description says “This group is for all of you who want to restore Richard III’s good name. If you believe Richard was innocent from the murder of his two nephews and want to promote the truth of his innocence, this group is for you!”

So if you have facebook, go on and have a look!

Annette Carson on our Website!

   Posted by: Dorothea Preis Tags:

annette-scan-croppedGreat news!  Respected author Annette Carson has let us use any of her published articles for our website.  You can find her excellent articles in the About section.   Annette has a deep understanding of the period and offers us new and clearer insight into the Ricardian era.

Her fascinating book Richard III – The Maligned King, which was up to now only available as hardback, is due out in paperback later this month, which means it will be much more affordable (£12.99 is the UK price).    We certainly hope that the paperback edition will also be available in Australia soon.  She has also supplied us with a little paragraph which was offered to magazines to coincide with the paperback appearing:  this offers a list of the principal amendments in the paperback to anyone who bought the first edition and would like to see the changes.  There were a few corrections to make (thankfully not too many!), but there have also been some interesting items that came to light in time to be included.  Should you have the hardback edition and be interested in obtaining this paragraph, please contact us at library@richardiii-nsw.org.au.

Battle of the Monarchs

   Posted by: Dorothea Preis Tags:

white-rose-smallFoyles Bookshop in London recently hosted an event called the ‘Battle of the Monarchs’.  Contestants were Edward I, Elizabeth I, James I and Richard III.  The aim was to decide who was England’s greatest monarch.   The big surprise was that Richard was presented by Alison Weir, who – on the basis of her printed work – nobody would have suspected of too strong pro-Ricardian feelings.

As unfortunately nobody from our branch could be in London for this exciting event, we contacted Foyles asking them to let us know how it went.  Today we received an answer .  It seems Edward I was victorious on this occasion, but apparently it was a very close run thing.   However, we were all very excited to see that Richard made the shortlist in the first place.   Clearly,  if they had asked us, the result would have been completely different!
